US Delivers Two AN/TPQ-36 Firefinder Counter Battery Radar Systems to Ukraine

The United States military has completed the delivery of two brand new radar systems to Ukrainian armed forces. Ukraine is in a time of crisis, so the decision was made by the US Army to deliver the system - thus shoring up the country’s defense and internal security operations. Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko gave the green light on the delivery after being debriefed by the US military. The radars will be used by the Ukrainian military to help protect themselves and civilians from deadly attacks from rockets and other artillery.

The radar they will be using is the AN/TPQ-36 Firefinder radar - one that is used to quickly locate weapons with accuracy. Made by French defense company Thales, it will automatically locate medium-range enemy mortars, artillery, and rocket launchers. The system has the ability to track multiple enemy threats simultaneously. Even if the enemy weapon in question fires only one round, it can detect and report its location accurately.

In the past two years, it is estimated that the United States has given over $265 million in security assistance to Ukraine. For 2016, the US has already allocated $300 million of its budget towards aiding Ukraine by boosting their defense capabilities. Barack Obama has chosen to delegate authority to the Secretary of State to draw down up to $20m in defense articles and services. More than 8,000 Ukrainians have been killed because of the ongoing conflict, according to the United Nations.

Ukraine will hope to minimize future casualties by employing their new radar systems as soon as possible.
