Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower Geared Turbofan Wins 2015 Gold Edison Award

Pratt & Whitney has won the 2015 Gold Edison Award in the transportation-aviation category for their PurePower Geared Turbofan. The award recognizes achievement in innovation, creativity, and ingenuity in the global economy.

Pratt & Whitney officials credited their work ethic and not being complacent with what they have done in the past.

Since 1987, the Edison Awards have been given out annually in The Capitale’s ballroom in New York City. It salutes those who show excellence in new product and service development, marketing, and human-centered design. It is inspired by the spirit of Thomas Edison’s persistence and inventiveness.

The PurePower PW 1000G Turbofan has gone through 20 years of research, testing, and development. It offers significant reductions in fuel burn, environmental emissions, engine noise, and operating costs. It has completed over 17,000 hours and 32,000 cycles of full engine testing. It also has 4,000 hours of flight time under its belt.

Five aircraft platforms currently use the Pratt & Whitney GTF engine: the Mitsubishi MRJ, Airbus A320neo, Bombardier CSeries, Embraer E-Jets E2, and Irkut MC-21.
